confessions of a….

I have a confession – I’m a Moscato Drinker! Yep, there you have it, I drink Moscato, but I am not the only one. Moscato sales have soared with an astounding 70% increase in 2011.

Originally Moscato was that little wine in the Italian restaurant you’d start your evening with, but now you can find it at all the parties and in all the night clubs.  Marketing to the younger crowd with the help of Drake and Kanye, and with Roscoe Dash singing its praises, a less pretentious wine industry has emerged. With Moscato’s easy drinkability and sheer simplicity, it’s no wonder I love this wine.

So, Bethann, tell us, why do you love this wine?
I’m so glad you asked.
• It’s the perfect alternative for beer drinkers: light and refreshing with similar texture as beer.
• White Zinfandel drinkers must try it.
• Because it’s soft and easy to drink, it’s great for the first time wine drinkers.
• Super Tasters will love it: because of its low alcohol levels it won’t burn your tongue or upset your stomach.

And what exactly is Moscato?
Another very good question, Loyal Reader.
Moscato is another name for the Muscat Grape, with over a dozen varieties from white to black and grown in at least 25 different countries. This wild grape has no boundaries but that’s what makes it so fun.  It is often a sweet wine with a little effervescence and offers flavors of peach, tropical fruit, pineapple, pears, exotic floral, orange blossoms and honeyed apricots.

Pink Moscato?  You must be joking.
Nope, this is not a joke.
A pink Moscato happens when the producer leaves the grape skins on the wine for just a bit to color the wine a pretty pink color. Not only do we get a beautifully colored Moscato, we get flavors of Fairy Floss (cotton candy), sorbet, pink grapefruit, mandarin, rhubarb crumble, toffee apple and fresh pears.

Bethann, we have to eat.  Please help us with food pairings.
Settle down now, I have just the food for Moscato.
Since it is an easy wine to drink, it goes well with grilled fish or chicken, your favorite picnic foods, soft blue cheeses and mild cheeses like pimentino, goat cheese, fresh fruit salad, fresh strawberry crepes and sorbet.
Our best seller is Poggio Moscato (served at the Olive Garden), with Seven Daughters Moscato not too far behind. If you are looking for adventure, our Innocent Bystander Pink Moscato will have you singing with joy.
There’s no better time than now to step out of the shadows and into the light…the light of Moscato that is.  And do tell…what secrets have you been keeping?  You’ll feel better once you confess.  I’m all ears.
