A few years ago I happened across the Wemyss (pronounced ‘weems’) Vintage Malt Scotch range and was duly impressed with the quality of their malts. Wemys are a small, family-owned company based just outside of Edinburgh in the county of Fife. Since the 1300’s the family seat has been Wemyss Castle, and today the family farms the surrounding lands and provides barley to some of Scotland’s most well-known distilleries. They also happen to be an independent bottler of fine Scotch, which leads us to the newest malt to appear on our shelves: The Hive 8 Year Old.
Wymyss’s The Hive is a marriage of malts from a select group of Speyside distilleries that epitomize the delicate, floral, sweet Speyside style. With a nose of honey and heather pollen and tasting notes of dried fruits, butterscotch, and dark chocolate, The Hive is one of the best blends coming out of Scotland right now. Indeed, it was voted Whisky Magazine’s best blended single malt Scotch of 2012 and racked up a score of 93 points in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.
We stocked up when The Hive became available through our distributor, because I suspect that when you try this whisky and see the price, you will be back for more. At just $34.99, there is no better bargain in Scotch right now. See for yourself what all the buzz is about!
