A Summer in Provence: Commanderie de la Bargemone Rosé 2012

If we had our way, we’d be in Provence right now. From the rushing Rhone River, to the sparkling shores of the Mediterranean, to the ancient history that seems to emanate from the soil itself, it seems an ideal place to spend the summer. Alas, the responsibilities of home and job keep us tied to Indy, but it’s nice to dream. And assisting us with that Provençal dream is our June Rosé of the Month- Commanderie de la Bargemone  Rosé  2012.

Commanderie de la Bargemone Rosé 2012Originating from the Coteaux d’Aix, this dry and piquant rosé has aromas of slightly under-ripe wild strawberries and mountain herbs. It tastes quite fresh but also carries a richness in the mouth. The red fruit flavors are intense but balanced, and its pale color belies the complexity of the wine. It also has lovely floral aromas that practically carry us away to France. The blend here is 20% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 15% Cinsault, and 30% Cabernet.

The Bargemone estate stands on a property that was first established by the Knights Templar in the 13th century. Since then (after bearing witness to a variety of plagues, the Hundred Years War, the French Revolution, and the Second World War), the land has passed through the hands of the Count of Les Baux, the Arbaud de Bargemon, and the Thomassin Bargemon family, who gave their name to the property. The wine ages between 3 and 12 months after spending 10-20 days fermenting, and the variety of grapes used allows for a smoothness that is typical of Provence.

Typical of Provence, and perfect for transporting us there when our day-to-day responsibilities keep us here at Vine & Table. Come by to pick up a bottle or a case to drink through the year- remember that rosé wines aren’t just for summertime! More than once we’ve been known to uncorked a rosé on a cold winter’s eve and found ourselves swept away to a warmer, sunnier place.

Santé!
